May Winery of the Month: X Winery

“The most obvious question with respect to X Winery and proprietor Reed Renaudin is how can these wines be this good at these prices? Everyone is looking for good values today, and here are some exceptional bargains” – Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

X Winery’s Reed Renaudin focuses on creating blended wines that change each vintage.  His goal is to create wines whose quality surpasses the price tag.  Reed explores possibilities that more traditional winemakers never consider because he follows only one rule: Make wines people love to drink.

White Blend

North Coast, Ca

55% Sauvignon Blanc, 18% Chardonnay, 16% Riesling, 11% Malvasia Bianca

This unique blend represents the culmination of the union of distinct varietals from the best, most suitable vineyard locations across the North Coast.  This sassy white is fragrant and intense, with lively character to a medley of orange rind, floral, vanilla and ripe honeydew melon flavors with tropical fruit undertones.  A majestically rich, balanced wine with crisp minerality and acidity.  Pair with grilled cuisine, seafood, veggies and poultry.

Red Blend

North Coast, Ca

52% Syrah, 19% Mourvedre, 17% Zinfandel, 12% Grenache

Dark ruby color with a nose of wild cherry, cinnamon toast, cashew, cranberry and a hint of blueberry.  This bold blend weaves together an array of harmonious flavors and aromas with finesse achieved through years of experience.  The finish features soft and supple tannins.  Pair with pizza, grilled meats and seafood, and hard cheeses.

April Winery of the Month: Trivento Winery

Trivento Winery is a project started by Chilean Winery, Concha Y Toro.  In the mid 1990’s Concha y Toro purchased vineyards in the Mendoza region of Argentina.  They employed famed enologist, Alberto Antonini to lend his expertise in selecting vineyard sites and establishing the winery.  Mendoza is a wine region that exemplifies the advantages of high altitude viticulture.  Significant shifts in daytime and nighttime temperatures help to minimize the risk of pest and disease in the vineyards.  These temperature shifts also help to intensify the flavors and natural acidity in the grapes, ending in wines with great intensity of flavor.

Golden Reserve Chardonnay

Mendoza

With it’s wild and intriguing tropical fruit and barrel spice aroma, this wine tempts you into having your first sip.  Rich body and velvety oak texture then further entice you to have another.  The wonderful finish of slight minerality and fresh acidity make this a wonderful example of what New World Chardonnay can be.  Perfect to pair with seafood, cream sauces and poultry dishes.

Golden Reserve Malbec

Lujan de Cuyo (Mendoza)

Great pedigree on this wine, made with grapes from the best of the Malbec producing regions, and from long established vineyards.  Strong aromas of red fruits, and smoky oak.  Full bodied with spice and cherries overlaid on a wonderful theme of oak aging.  This a serious wine for all red wine drinkers.  With a full twelve months in oak and another full twelve months in bottle it is a wonderful example of what this grape can be.  Stick some of this wine down to age for  a while, you won’t be disappointed.  Malbec is a natural with grilled meat dishes, specifically beef and lamb.

Barnard Griffin Dry Rose of Sangiovese

After working hard in the garden yesterday, the babe and I sat down for some much needed relaxation on the deck.  What better accompaniment?  A glass of the new vintage of Barnard Griffin Dry Rose of Sangiovese $12.99.  This wine rocks!  It offers forth tons of cherry and raspberry fruit on a rich, soft palate.  The finish is crisp and refreshing, which keeps you coming back for more.  This is not only a great “porch pounder”, it is also a great choice for food as well.

Ideal Pairings:  Gazpacho, Salmon, Grilled Seafood, Poultry, Pork & Veggies
